The Hidden Dangers of Popular Laundry Detergents

Laundry detergents are a staple in every household in America. We trust these products to clean our clothes, remove stains, and leave a fresh scent behind. But what if we told you that many of the most popular laundry detergents contain harmful chemicals that can pose significant risks to you and your familly’s health? If you are looking for a nontoxic laundry detergent swap, these are my two recommendations and I will explain why in this blog post!

What Harmful Ingredients Should We Avoid?

Laundry detergents are packed with chemicals that can be harmful to both your health and the environment. Some of the most concerning ingredients found in many popular brands include:

  1. Fragrance Chemicals: Many detergents contain artificial fragrances that are linked to skin irritation, allergies, and even respiratory problems. Get headaches from the smell of your clothes? This ingredient is the culprit. These synthetic scents can also cause long-term health issues due to the accumulation of harmful chemicals in your body. YIKES.
  2. Phosphates: Phosphates are used to soften water and enhance detergent performance of removing grease and oils from your clothes. However, they can contribute to water pollution by promoting algae blooms in rivers and lakes, which leads to oxygen depletion and aquatic life destruction. Some states in the US have banned or restricted the use of phosphates in detergents, but this doesn’t mean we are in the clear. There are plenty of brands that still use it. So make sure to read those labels!
  3. Surfactants: While surfactants help detergents dissolve grease and dirt, some of them, like alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), are known endocrine disruptors. These chemicals can interfere with hormone systems and have been linked to fertility problems and developmental issues. These stats are terrifying as a mom so we are extra careful when looking into brands for my boys’ laundry.
  4. Optical Brighteners: These chemicals are added to laundry detergents to make clothes appear brighter and whiter. However, these brighteners can cause skin irritation.

How Laundry Detergents Affect Your Health

Using popular laundry detergents with harmful chemicals can have a direct impact on your health. This was one of the main reasons why I wanted to switch our laundry detergent to a nontoxic option. As a mom who went through two rough postpartum experiences, my hormones were already way out of whack, so I wanted products that didn’t make it worse! Here’s a few things to think about when purchasing those traditional brands and the negative affects they can have on your body.

Skin Irritation and Allergies

Frequent exposure to laundry detergents containing synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives can lead to allergic reactions and skin irritation. People with sensitive skin, children, and those with existing skin conditions like eczema are particularly vulnerable. Redness, itching, and rashes are common side effects of prolonged contact with detergents that contain these harsh chemicals.

Respiratory Issues

Some detergent ingredients, especially fragrances and VOCs (volatile organic compounds), can irritate the lungs and exacerbate asthma and other respiratory conditions. These chemicals can be inhaled as they evaporate during the washing and drying process, affecting your home air quality.

Endocrine Disruption and Hormonal Imbalance

The scariest of them all (for me personally). Certain chemicals found in laundry detergents, such as surfactants and optical brighteners, are known endocrine disruptors. These substances can interfere with hormone production and regulation, potentially leading to fertility issues, early puberty, and developmental problems in children. Isn’t it terrifying that these chemicals are still allowed in our products? It is so frustrating.

Switching to Non-Toxic Laundry Detergents

Fortunately, there are safer alternatives available. By switching to eco-friendly and non-toxic laundry detergents, you can reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals and lessen your environmental impact. Here are some tips:

  • Look for natural ingredients: Choose detergents that are free from artificial fragrances, phosphates, and optical brighteners. Look for products that use plant-based surfactants, biodegradable ingredients, and essential oils for fragrance.
  • Opt for concentrated formulas: Concentrated detergents are more efficient and use less packaging, reducing waste. They also require fewer chemicals to achieve the same cleaning power.
  • Choose biodegradable packaging: Support brands that use recyclable or biodegradable packaging, which helps reduce plastic waste in landfills.
  • Make your own detergent: For a truly natural and chemical-free option, consider making your own laundry detergent using simple ingredients like baking soda, washing soda, and Castile soap.
