Recipe Collection: Homemade Jello

Who doesn’t love a good, wobbly, sweet treat? Jello has been a staple in many households for decades, but if you’re looking to skip the artificial ingredients and make a healthier, more natural version at home, you’re in for a treat. This homemade jello recipe is incredibly simple, requiring just three ingredients: juice, gelatin, and honey. It’s the perfect, customizable dessert to impress friends and family, and it’s surprisingly easy to make! Let’s get started!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 4 cups of juice (Any juice you love! Orange, apple, grape, or even cranberry work wonders.)
  • 2 tablespoons of gelatin powder (I use Great Lakes Wellness Gelatin off Amazon! This is the key ingredient that gives your jello that satisfying jiggle!)
  • 2 tablespoons of honey (or any sweeter you like) – OPTIONAL – If your juice already contains high amounts of sugar, I wouldn’t add any additional sweeteners.

Directions

1. Bloom the Gelatin

Start by pouring 1/2 cup of your juice into a small bowl or measuring cup. Sprinkle the gelatin powder over the juice and stir to combine. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. During this time, the gelatin will bloom — it thickens up and becomes grainy, which is completely normal. You’ll know it’s ready when it looks like a gel-like texture, ready to be melted into the rest of your juice!

2. Heat the Remaining Juice

While the gelatin blooms, take the remaining 3 1/2 cups of juice and heat it over medium-high heat in a medium saucepan. Keep an eye on it — you don’t need it to boil, but it should be steaming hot. This step is crucial because the hot juice helps dissolve the gelatin.

3. Melt the Bloomed Gelatin

Once your juice is nice and hot, it’s time to add the gelatin into the mix! Add the bloomed gelatin and your honey (or any sweetener you’re using) to the hot juice. Stir everything together thoroughly to ensure the gelatin dissolves completely. This is a vital step, so make sure there are no clumps left. You want a smooth, even mixture.

4. Set the Gelatin

Now that your gelatin mixture is ready, pour it into a heatproof container — something like a 2-quart ceramic pan (an 8×8, 9×9, or 11×7 pan works well!). Cover the pan with plastic wrap to avoid anything touching the surface and messing with the texture. Place your pan in the fridge and let it chill for at least 3-4 hours or until fully set. The longer it chills, the firmer and jigglier your jello will be!

5. Serve and Store

Once your jello is set, it’s time to enjoy! Cut it into cubes, serve it in bowls, or even try it with some whipped cream on top for extra flair (my boys LOVE when i do this!). For the best texture and flavor, enjoy your homemade jello within 4-5 days. It’ll still last up to 7-10 days in the fridge, but trust me, it’s so delicious, it probably won’t last that long!

Why Make Homemade Jello?

Making your own jello is not only fun, but it’s also healthier and more customizable than the store-bought versions. You can control the sweetness with natural ingredients like honey or maple syrup, and choose your favorite juice flavors for a personalized touch. Plus, it’s free of artificial dyes and preservatives, making it a great option for both kids and adults.

Conclusion

Homemade jello is so easy to make, and once you try it, you’ll never want to go back to the boxed stuff. With just a few ingredients and simple steps, you can create a fun, healthy, and delicious treat for any occasion. Try experimenting with different juice blends and sweeteners to find your perfect flavor combination!

Happy jello-making!
